Yoko Kanno has created another sonic masterpiece that not only can stand alone on it own merits but also adds power, emotion and depth to the movie. The collection of female vocalists on this album are phenomenal. The musical diversity, experimentation, arrangement and quality are all superb.
1. Yoko Kanno (Gabriela Robin?) 2. Heartsdales 3. Origa 4. ILA
I have compiled my impressions of each track on this album…
1. player <Origa with Heartsdales> 5:42
player is a haunting operatic-frenetic dance track. It fuses deep orchestral strings and staccato-frenetic house and Heatsdales’s rhythmic rapping and Origa’s airy soprano vocals. There are several movements that vary in tempo and will most likely alter the listener’s emotions too. It is the opening theme for SSS. player (movie edit)~ lyrics
2. replica <Ilaria Graziano “ILA”> … 5:23
replica, has a laid-back-varying tempo but it never outpaces player. ILA’s vocals are hauntingly sad and beautiful.
3. zero signal … 4:05
zero signal evokes thoughts of an epic adventure- with vast landscapes and hard times. It is a fusion of hard rock, house and ambient.
4. solid state society … 4:40
solid state society is a blues infused orchestral jazz piece; its pure genius. Hope. Pain. Sorrow. Anger. Triumph.
5. tempest … 2:52
tempest is a beautiful orchestral track with swelling strings, rumbling bass.
6. born stubborn … 3:25
born stubborn is the rebellious track. Electric guitars jangle and bass guitars thump. It’s a lackadaisical, cowboy-stoically-longing-for-home, red-hot-searing blues number.
7. she is <Gabriela Robin> … 2:35
she is is as mysterious as its vocalist. Its tempo stumbles through a haze of trance and wispy vocals. Like a dream you don’t want to wake from – beautiful and too short.
8. from the roof top ~ somewhere in the silence (sniper’s theme) <Ilaria Graziano> … 6:24
sniper’s theme is a trance-pop track that ironically makes you feel good. ILA’s voice is cute and dreamy.
9. undivided … 2:03
undivided begins as a dark and brooding orchestral piece with rhythmic swooshing (think Blue Man Group) and angsty electric guitar wails and abruptly transforms into strutting-thumping pop near the end.
10. blues in the Net … 6:41
blues in the Net is ambient and haunting. It paints in my mind a picture of a lost child wandering around in a mysterious cybernetic-alice-in-wonderland forest. Sonic-candy – bittersweet chocolate.
11. human step (Aramaki’s theme) … 3:32
human step is a triumphant orchestral march. It evokes emotions of well deserved pride and a sense of epic accomplishment. It should become the official soundtrack to the video of Neil Armstrong’s one small step.
12. date of rebirth <Origa> … 4:40
date of rebirth is a stirring rock ballad accompanied by Origa’s ironic-poetic lyrics. It is the ending theme for SSS. What more could you want? This song rocks! date of rebirth~ lyrics
13. take a little hand <Gabriela Robin> … 5:05
take a little hand is a lovely fusion of tender classical guitar, pop-trance and female vocals. It captures the innocence and gentle fragility of a child.
14. remedium … 3:10
remedium is an orchestral piece that that reprises many themes established in earlier tracks. It’s a proper conclusion to a wonderful album.
Sensei no Otaku says: “Yoko Kanno is simply the most gifted composer I’ve ever heard.”
